The Rolex GMT-Master: A Time-Traveling Journey Through History and Milestones
The Rolex GMT-Master is a legendary timepiece known for its dual time zone functionality, distinctive design, and its close association with aviation and exploration. Since its inception in the 1950s, the GMT-Master has seen numerous iterations and advancements, earning a well-deserved place among the icons of the watchmaking world. In this article, we will take a deep dive into the history and significant milestones of the Rolex GMT-Master.
The Birth of the GMT-Master
The story of the GMT-Master began in 1954 when Rolex introduced the model specifically for Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) pilots. Pan Am needed a watch that could display two time zones simultaneously, a feature essential for long-haul flights across multiple time zones. The result was the GMT-Master, a timepiece designed for world travelers and aviators alike.
The Milestones Through the Decades
1954 - Reference 6542: The original GMT-Master, Reference 6542, was introduced with a red and blue "Pepsi" bezel. This iconic feature, which helped distinguish between day and night hours, became a signature of the GMT-Master.
1959 - Reference 1675: Rolex introduced the Reference 1675, which featured improved water resistance and the option for a black and red "Coke" bezel in addition to the classic Pepsi bezel.
1960s - Concorde Connection: The GMT-Master became the official watch of the British-French supersonic airliner Concorde, cementing its reputation as an essential tool for world travelers.
1983 - GMT-Master II: Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II, which allowed independent adjustment of the local hour hand. This innovation made setting the local time easier, without stopping the movement of the watch.
2005 - Cerachrom Bezel: The introduction of the Cerachrom ceramic bezel on the GMT-Master marked a significant advancement in material technology. The Cerachrom bezel is highly resistant to fading and scratching, ensuring long-lasting beauty.
2018 - The "Pepsi" Jubilee Bracelet: Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II with a "Pepsi" bezel on a Jubilee bracelet, a callback to the vintage aesthetics that enthusiasts cherished.
2021 - The "Batman" and "Root Beer" Models: Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II in a black and blue "Batman" bezel and a brown and black "Root Beer" bezel, further expanding the appeal of this iconic timepiece.

The Rolex GMT-Master was first introduced in 1954 as the reference model 6542. The watch had two innovations that were revolutionary at the time. The date magnifying bubble (cyclops) and the dual time zone complication. Pan American Airlines (Pan Am) approached Rolex and asked them to develop a watch for their pilots which led to the first Rolex GMT Master model 6542 mentioned above. This is also when the iconic Red and Blue Bezel (Pepsi) was born. From this point on the Rolex GMT Master would slowly be upgraded with better movements, the case size would increase and more types of metals and colors would be available. The collector nicknames would slowly follow. The Rolex GMT Master Pepsi, Coke, Root Beer, Batman, and Batgirl were coined among collectors.
